Eternal vigilance on an Amazon floodplain

چکیده
Deep and puzzling evolutionary questions are still being raised by the unfashionable work of systematic biologists. James S. Albert describes some such work and argues why we need much more of it in the face of unprecedented loss of species through human activity.

Use of ordinary Kriging algorithm and wavelet analysis to understanding the turbidity behavior in an Amazon floodplain
The objective of this paper is to study the turbidity behavior in an Amazon Floodplain Lake. Observations of turbidity provide quantitative information about water quality conditions. However, the number of available in situ measurements of water quality characteristics is usually limited, especially temporal series variables and synoptic coverage of extensive water body. In order to contribute...
متن کاملMultispecies Fisheries in the Lower Amazon River and Its Relationship with the Regional and Global Climate Variability
This paper aims to describe the spatial-temporal variability in catch of the main fishery resources of the Amazon River and floodplain lakes of the Lower Amazon, as well as relating the Catch per Unit of Effort with anomalies of some of the Amazon River, atmosphere and Atlantic Ocean system variables, determining the influence of the environment on the Amazonian fishery resources. Finfish landi...
متن کاملReply to Schöngart et al.: Forest resilience variation across Amazonian floodplains.
Our recent findings that floodplain ecosystems harbor the most fragile forests of the Amazon (1) was seen by Schöngart et al. (2) as an oversimplification of a complex ecosystem. They argue that the majority of floodplain forests are associated with fertile soils, and should therefore be highly resilient. Indeed, the differences between nutrient-rich white-water and nutrient-poor black-water sy...
متن کاملSimultaneous abrupt shifts in hydrology and fish assemblage structure in a floodplain lake in the central Amazon
Combined effects of climate change and deforestation have altered precipitation patterns in the Amazon. This has led to changes in the frequency of extreme events of flood and drought in recent decades and in the magnitude of the annual flood pulse, a phenomenon that influences virtually all aspects of river-floodplain ecosystem dynamics. Analysis of long-term data revealed abrupt and synchrono...
متن کاملWater quality changes in floodplain lakes due to the Amazon River flood pulse: Lago Grande de Curuaí (Pará).
Assurance of water quality for human consumption is essential for public health policies. In the Amazon floodplain, the seasonal water level variation causes periodic flooding of marginal areas that are usually used for settlements, agriculture and livestock. Therefore, the exchange of materials between the terrestrial and aquatic ecosystem affects the proportion of suspended and dissolved comp...
